این فرهنگ لغت حاوی 13,000 اصطلاح به همراه بیش از 4,000 ارجاع متقابل است که در زمینه‌های زیر مورد استفاده قرار می‌گیرند: اتوماسیون، فناوری مدیریت و تنظیم، ماشین‌های محاسباتی و پردازش داده‌ها، کنترل کامپیوتری، اتوماسیون صنعت، فناوری لیزر، نظریه اطلاعات و نظریه سیگنال‌ها، نظریه الگوریتم‌ها و برنامه‌نویسی، مبانی فلسفی سایبرنتیک، سایبرنتیک و روش‌های ریاضی.

اتوماسیون مربوط به نظریه، هنر یا فن ساخت یک ماشین، یک فرآیند یا یک دستگاه به صورت کاملاً خودکار است. کامپیوترها و تجهیزات پردازش اطلاعات به دلیل توانایی ذاتی کامپیوتر در ایجاد تصمیماتی که در واقع فرآیند را از اطلاعات دریافتی توسط کامپیوتر در مورد وضعیت فرآیند کنترل یا اداره می‌کنند، نقش بزرگی در اتوماسیون یک فرآیند ایفا می‌کنند. بنابراین اتوماسیون هم به نظریه و هم به تکنیک‌های استفاده از سیستم‌های خودکار در کاربردهای صنعتی و فرآیندهای بررسی، طراحی و تبدیل به روش‌های خودکار مربوط می‌شود. کنترل خودکار، جابجایی خودکار مواد، آزمایش خودکار، بسته‌بندی خودکار، هم برای پردازش مداوم و هم برای دسته‌ای، همگی به عنوان بخشی از فرآیند کلی یا کاملاً خودکار در نظر گرفته می‌شوند.

این فرهنگ لغت از دو بخش، جدول اصلی و فهرست‌ها، تشکیل شده است. در بخش اول، اصطلاحات انگلیسی به ترتیب حروف الفبا فهرست شده، به طور پیوسته شماره‌گذاری شده و معادل‌های آلمانی، فرانسوی و روسی آن‌ها در ادامه آمده است. مترادف‌های انگلیسی به عنوان ارجاع متقابل به ورودی‌های اصلی در ترتیب الفبایی مناسب خود ظاهر می‌شوند. بخش دوم فرهنگ لغت، فهرست‌ها، شامل فهرست‌های الفبایی جداگانه از اصطلاحات آلمانی، فرانسوی و روسی است. شماره(های) ارجاع همراه با هر اصطلاح نشان‌دهنده شماره اصطلاح(های) انگلیسی در جدول اصلی است.

Automation pertains to the theory, art, or technique of making a machine, a process or a device more fully automatic. Computers and information processing equipment play a large role in the automation of a process because of the inherent ability of a computer to develop decision that will, in effect, control or govern the process from the information received by the computer concerning the status of the process. Thus automation pertains to both the theory, and techniques of using automatic systems in industrial applications and the processes of investigation, design and conversion to automatic methods. Automatic control, automatic materials handling, automatic testing, automatic packaging, for continuous as well as batch processing, are all considered parts of the overall or completely automatic process.
The Dictionary consists of two parts, Basic Table and Indexes. In the first part the English terms are listed alphabetically, numbered consecutively and followed by its German, French and Russian equivalents. English synonyms appear as cross-references to the main entries in their proper alphabetical order. The second part of the Dictionary, the Indexes, contains separate alphabetical indexes of the German, French and Russian terms. The reference number(s) with each term stands for the number of the English term(s) in the basic table.
